We have a rare opportunity to help convince Governor Perry to commute a death sentence to life in prison. The Board of Pardons and Paroles has unanimously recommended that Governor Perry commute Joe Lee Guy’s death sentence to life in prison.

Terry McEachern, the district attorney for Hale County who prosecuted Guy, has joined the request that Guy’s sentence be commuted. Also signing on were state District Judge Ed Self, who now presides over the court where Guy was convicted, former Hale County Sheriff Charlie True and current sheriff David Mull.
Perry has had the recommendation since January, but he has not acted. Please contact Perry and urge him to accept the recommendation of the Board of Pardons and Paroles and commute Joe Lee Guy’s sentence to life in prison. Please also express your sympathy for the family of the murder victim, Mr. Larry Howell. You can point out that Mr Guy did not actually kill Mr Howell, that Mr Guy waited outside as a lookout, while two other men went inside and killed Mr Howell. The two other men, including the actual trigger man, were sentenced to life in prison. Joe Lee Guy, the lookout, was sentenced to death.
