10 Things You Can Do to Help Stop Executions
- Volunteer for an organization working to stop executions.
Texas Moratorium Network needs volunteers. There are also dozens of other organizations working in various ways to stop executions. For anti-death penalty organizations nationwide, as well as other death penalty links
check this site for a list of links.
- Write a letter to your city council members asking them to pass a resolution calling for a moratorium.
- Watch your local paper for articles about the death penalty in general or about specific cases, and write a letter to
the editor thanking them for accurate coverage or correcting them if coverage
is biased.
- Find out how your elected representatives have voted on death penalty related issues, especially a moratorium.
Call and
ask for their voting records, not just on bills relating to a moratorium, but also on related issues such as:
- life without parole
- banning executions of juvenile offenders
- implementing the U.S. Supreme Court ban on executions of people with mental retardation
Whether or not you agree with the votes of your elected officials, write them
and let them know that this is an issue on which you make voting decisions.
- Talk to your friends, family and co-workers about the death penalty and why you believe we need a moratorium on executions.
- Keep yourself informed by reading about the death penalty, such as Sister Helen Prejean's new book, "The Death of Innocents".
- Donate to an organization working to stop executions.
- Vote!
- Hold a house meeting to discuss the death penalty with your friends. You could show
"Balancing the Scales", a TMN video about why Texas needs a moratorium.
- Download a petition and ask your friends to show their support for a moratorium. Mail the petitions to us, so we can use them to persuade policy makers to support a moratorium.
